Workshop in the gallery making decoupaged boxes inspired by photography of Blackpool and ready to fill with exciting things which reveal your identity. You can have a go at home, all you need is a cardboard box, a free newspaper from the Grundy (available before March 3rd) scissors and PVA glue. Cover the cardboard box in images, add a bit of colour and cover in PVA. Allow to dry and then fill!

Book making workshop with the artist Robyn Woolston. They each made a wonderful folding book and took things home to carry on making a beautiful and mystical paper theatre.

Start Club workshop on colour

We made drawings which taught us about colours and how they look different next to other colours. We made drawings representing the month of March through stripes of colours and then in groups of three we made a large striped painting, using wood and electrical tape.

It was all inspired by the David Whitaker paintings on show in the Grundy Art Gallery until the 14th of May.

Karis, who is 15 and doing her Silver Arts Award with us, lead a workshop on how to make explosive books. They fold out into the story. There were some really creative ideas! Well done.

Memory Boxes made by Start Club and Start Plus

Start and Start Plus had a look at the exhibition Maeve Rendle, Unframe which looks at the idea that when you come across something some extraordinary or something so horrible that it changes your world and what you knew before.

We made memory boxes to record the times when you come across things like; the best sandwhich or the worst song you have ever heard or the best perfromance you have ever seen and so on. Writing little notes about that experience with the date so that you can look back on the moments that changed your view and expectations.

They did a wonderful job collaging onto their boxes, have a look below.

The Start Plus group worked with John Morrow to create sounds using instruments, objects and their voices and then they painted in reaction to those sounds.

Start club young people were making cardboard buildings on Saturday to go in the Collaborate and Make exhibition of a cardboard city. Here they are working hard on building; bridges, hotels, handbag houses, airports and cafes. Excellent work!

Start Plus group also made fantastic buildings and here they are, well done Charlie and Cheryl.

This artwork was created by a Start Club member during a workshop led by one of the Grundy's Silver Arts Award young people, Edward Fletcher. Edward showed them how to create a masterpiece using only masking tape.

This piece was painted whilst listening to different types of music; sad, happy, lively, slow and cultural.

This piece is a monster made from recycled materials in a workshop with artist Caroline Brown.

Here Start club members get messy making prints with artist Alan Birch.

They created powerful group work with artist Jemma Egan, using one word as their starting point.

They made rainbows with Japanese artist Shigenabou Yoshida using very simple aparatus.

Start Club members worked with artist Stephen Oldfield to create life size portraits in black and white using a long and wiggly stick.
